Snal Review
There's an interesting review of Snal Linux on Distrowatch. Since there's no way to respond on Distrowatch and I literally wanted to respond to each sentence, I figured I'd do so here.
If you want old school basic Linux, then welcome to Snal!
I do want old school basic Linux. Thank you.
About as minimal as you can get, but using nearly 2 GB of RAM for some reason.
Yeah. Loading nearly 2GB of ISO directly into RAM so that you don't need to keep the USB plugged in will use . . . carry the one . . . nearly 2GB of RAM.
I really don't see the point of this, when there are much better lightweight distros about with more features and that use a lot less RAM.
I want to point out that there is an option to not load the ISO into RAM, but, really, this is a good criticism: Snal isn't the best option for most use cases or most people. There are better lightweight distros out there. They have more features. They use less RAM. Damn Small Linux, Finnix, GRML, Puppy, Slax, SliTaz, SystemRescue, and Tiny Core exist. One of those will almost certainly be a better option for a live distro.
It doesn't boot particularly quickly either, which leaves me wondering if a rating of 3 is perhaps being a little too generous.
Loading nearly 2GB of ISO directly into RAM so that you don't need to keep the USB plugged in will take . . . carry the one . . . time.
On the plus side..... well there is no plus side really, even the ISO is pretty large for such a minimalist distro
The ISO is large because I added the applications that I want available. I don't much care how big the ISO is as long as it fits on my USB drive and boots on the machines I want to use.
And the 'Snal' name next to an obviously snail graphic is both confusing and just plain wrong.
In Rainier Wolfcastle voice: Thats the joke.
Apart from that I love it !
Yay! I'm glad!
